If you’re anything like us, the constant stream of news has us begging for change. But as they say, all politics is local—and the importance of state elections has never been clearer.
It’s easy to feel stuck watching the same headlines repeat—school cuts, healthcare gaps, families working overtime and still falling behind. And if you’ve ever thought, someone should do something about this, we’re here to tell you: that someone is you.
We know all of us are watching what’s happening around the nation in horror, often feeling paralyzed and powerless. But most people don’t realize the importance of state elections, because Kentucky’s state legislature decides some of the most urgent issues we care about, not Washington.
And in 2026, we have a chance to do something about it.
While federal politics dominate the news, It’s the state legislature that sets the budget for your child’s school. It’s the legislature that can expand or restrict reproductive freedom. It’s the legislature that decides whether rural hospitals stay open, whether teachers get fair pay, and whether our communities get a real say in their futures.
The people elected to Kentucky’s state legislature shape policies that impact every single one of us. We can’t overstate the importance of state elections, too often, lawmakers decide without truly representing who we are or what our communities need. Right now, a supermajority dominates Kentucky’s state legislature, overriding vetoes and pushing legislation with little to no resistance. That kind of power imbalance affects every single Kentuckian—whether you voted for those lawmakers or not.
We’re not trying to be hyperbolic but this is not about playing political games. This is about your life, your family, and your future.
State legislative races don’t get the attention they deserve, but they have the power to change everything. And because voter turnout is lower in these elections, your vote carries more weight than you think.
In 2022, one Kentucky House race was decided by less than 100 votes. That’s a couple dozen neighbors, coworkers, friends, and extended family. When only a few thousand people are deciding the outcome, a handful of engaged voters can shift the balance of power. That’s what we’re hoping to do in 2026.
So yes—your vote counts. Especially here. Especially now.
Like we’ve already said politics affects all of us and there are so many different ways to shape the outcome of an election, more than just with your vote. That’s why understanding the importance of state elections means recognizing the power of early support.
One of the biggest is donating early.
Campaigns don’t just win in the final weeks — candidates build them over months and months of preparation. When candidates receive the support they need early on, they hire staff, reach voters, knock on doors, and show up in communities that have been overlooked for too long.
But if that support doesn’t come until October of 2026, it’s already too late. Early donations are how we create competitive races in the first place — especially in districts where the odds feel stacked. They make it possible to recruit strong candidates and give them the tools to run a real campaign.
Even $10 a month adds up when it’s consistent. It helps candidates plan ahead, not just react. And it tells people: your voice matters here.
We know it’s only 2025 when you’re reading this, and 2026 might feel far away. But by the time most people start paying attention, the most important decisions have already been made.
Which candidates are running. Which communities are being invested in. Which messages are reaching voters. All of that starts long before a single vote is cast. Waiting means working from behind. It means letting others set the tone, shape the conversation, and pick the players. And in too many districts across Kentucky, it’s the reason voters feel like they don’t have a real choice — because the work to create that choice never started.
If we want things to be different next year, we have to start building that difference today. That means showing up, organizing locally, supporting potential candidates, and building momentum early — not just picking the best candidate at the ballot box.
At Democracy Matters Kentucky, we’re focused on one thing: building a more representative and responsive state legislature. One that reflects our communities, listens to the people it serves, and delivers real results for every Kentuckian.
We support leaders who show up, fight for working families, and put people over politics—every time. This isn’t about partisanship. It’s about power—and who has it.
